[ Oblong Industries for IBM Watson ]

Programming: C++, shaders (GLSL), Processing (Java), YAML, GitHub, GitLab

I've helped lead interaction design and user experience for Oblong Industries' Advanced Technology Group (ATG) for the last 8 years, and worked on award winning (UX Design Award, 2018) projects for IBM Watson Experience Centers. I am integrally involved in defining narratives and generating visual language for the work, and I lead prototyping for our interactive, real-time, immersive visualizations and interfaces; and continue to work along side engineering during development to realize project visions.

Much of the content on this page was produced while working directly with Rob Harrigan (Design Principal, Immersive Design & AI Services) and Jenny Woo (Design Lead, Watson Immersive Experience), in collaboration with Local Projects, NY. There are some Tangents + Outtakes included as well that were either generated while prototyping for the module, or created after project delivery so that I could continue to explore the ideas, spaces, and relationships in the studies.

IBM Discovery News (2019): A collaboration with Jenny Woo (Design Lead of Watson Immersive Experiences at IBM) on a real-time, immersive, interactive data visualization for the Watson Discovery News service. The software is built in Oblong's g-speak spatial operating environment, and runs in real-time across 5 computers and 45 screens (93 million spatially and temporally synced pixels).

IBM WATSON IMMERSION ROOM MODULES:
At the heart of each IBM Watson Experience Center is an immersion room that surrounds its audience with 45 HD displays. That's 93.3 million pixels! Oblong has worked closely with IBM to develop new spatial visualizations and group interactions for these unique spaces, which host over 15,000 visitors every year.

The goal of each Watson Experience Center -- located in New York, San Francisco, and Cambridge -- is to demystify AI and challenge visitor's expectations through more tangible demonstrations of Watson technology. Visitors are guided through a series of narratives and data interfaces, each grounded in IBM's current capabilities in machine learning and AI.

Prototype visualization with Jenny Woo (Design Lead of Watson Immersive Experiences at IBM) at Oblong Industries exploring scale + distance in the galaxy. The visualization is based on public datasets: the Kepler data (white stars that have at least one exoplanet) is from the NASA Exoplanet Archive and the Hipparcos data (blue stars) is from the European Space Agency (Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg).
